What is Weleda?

Weleda is a world leader in the production of natural cosmetics and medicines of anthroposophic medicine.

Weleda’s goal is to maintain and restore people’s health. In 1921, the company was founded as a pharmaceutical laboratory with its own garden of medicinal plants. Today it is a world leader in the production of natural cosmetics for skincare, as well as anthroposophic medicine.

We can say that the history of Weleda began immediately in three places at the same time: the town of Arlesheim in the canton of Basel in Switzerland; Schwäbisch Gmund in the Stuttgart district of Germany and in the French city of Euning, Alsace. Today, at these three facilities, Weleda produces hundreds of cosmetic products and thousands of pharmaceuticals, which also include medicinal plants grown in Weleda’s own garden.

Weleda has been producing natural cosmetics and medicines for nearly 100 years.

Garden of Weleda

Another real and amazing embodiment of our ideas is our own biodynamic gardens, in which we grow most of the necessary medicinal plants. Weleda now has eight gardens, the largest of which is located in Germany (Schwäbisch Gmünd), the second-largest – in Argentina, the rest in the UK, Brazil, the Netherlands, New Zealand and in Switzerland and France. The biodynamic method involves the rejection of the use of artificial fertilizers, insecticides and chemical stimulants, housekeeping in accordance with the rhythms of nature and, for example, taking into account the influence of the moon. Farmers and gardeners use only those components that are formed naturally by processing the soil and plants, which means they carry vitality. The use of compost fertilizers helps to develop an active soil life, and special preparations with cow dung and grass fertilizers support its fertility.

Weleda Gardens is a rich natural environment with hedges and ecological niches for beneficial insects (there are even special hotels for them). Plant and animal diversity contributes to environmental stability, is a natural defense against pests and diseases. Weleda Gardens has a large number of plants, including even the so-called weeds, which are an important part of the flora. Representatives of the fauna are also active participants in the ecosystem. For example, sheep act as “lawn mowers” and naturally fertilize the soil. Ducks freely walking around the garden are “cops” who eat pests, such as slugs.

Quality assurance

Weleda natural cosmetics and medicines are the result of strict quality control at all levels: from the purchase of raw materials to the production and transportation of finished products. The main quality criteria for the company are strict adherence to recipes, control of both the origin of plant materials and all stages of production – including the creation of perfume compositions, clinical trials and packaging.

Without synthetic dyes, silicones, paraffin, petroleum products, synthetic fats, flavors, preservatives and genetically modified ingredients.
Proven Product Quality
Continuous research is also an important part of quality assurance. In the production of Weleda cosmetics, synthetic dyes and flavors, preservatives and genetically modified organisms, silicones, paraffin, other petroleum products and synthetic fats are never used.

We use raw materials obtained from certified organic or biodynamic farms, and harvested wild plants. Animal testing is prohibited in both development and production. Products are aromatized only with natural essential oils and are made so that synthetic or “identical to natural” preservatives are simply not needed.

In the production of natural cosmetics and medicines, Weleda’s motto, “In harmony with man and nature,” plays an important role. Raw materials, packaging and finished products meet the ethical requirements of the company, including compliance with GMP regulatory requirements (good manufacturing practice – good manufacturing practices), compliance with pharmacopeias and special national legal standards in the countries of production and sales. Particular attention is paid to the materials and environmental quality of our raw materials.

Getting raw materials

Weleda uses about 200 types of medicinal plants for the production of pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations, most of which are grown in their own gardens. The rest of the raw materials are purchased from trusted partners. We always know the origin of each ingredient and are confident in its quality. For us, respect for land resources is of fundamental importance. Therefore, our company is a member of UEBT, an ethical bio-trade association that supports biodiversity by setting certain standards for the cultivation and collection of raw materials over the long term. What does it look like in practice? For example, Weleda at higher prices for raw materials compensates for the losses that farmers who prefer aggressive farming to natural resources can suffer.
